It's been a long time in the planning with stops and starts, wrong choices, personnel dramas and we're finally all together with the right members for recording the SATIN STEEL JAZZ debut cd!!
This weekend in the studio will be Zack Page on bass, Brian Felix on piano, Justin Watt on drums, Rich Willey on trumpet and myself recording the first set of many songs in the line up. Compositions by my dad, Herb Haslam include: Simply Me, A Thousand Years Ago, Leaves From the Book of Changes and Shadows Fall. Each tune was originally composed within a score from a musical he wrote, pertaining to characters. Yet, the beauty and synchronicity of this project is that each song speaks to my story in life in real time.
"A Thousand Years Ago" is the title song and describes a woman who is coming into her own with love and life. She feels the strongest sense of a familiar presence in her life and I interpret this as her soul mate- here and near. It's warm and enticing and will be recorded as a bossa nova ballad.
"Simply Me" is more from the theme around a woman whose spirit is coming into her own authentic expression. In the release she sings: no more pretending to be someone I never wanted to be. It's a jubilant story with a liberating message and will be produced as a waltz swing.
"Shadows Fall" is a love song about the dark times that come between lovers. The compelling angst which holds love in the air too deep to let go and too painful to continue. This is a beautiful ballad with a tragic pining over a tenacious pulse.
"Leaves From the Book of Changes" is a love song which captures the lead up to a very strong bond between two people. The story speaks to the hearts of those who've known a deep love that unfolds into a quest of constant discovery. Written originally as a ballad, we'll be doing this love song as a light swing.
More to come in the spring with love song duets and great solos featuring the finest musical talent in jazz!

We'll be performing a very special set dedicated to my composer/author-dad Herb Haslam, on Saturday, January 28th. The performance will feature Eve Haslam on vocals with Wilmington's favorite Donnie White on piano in the lounge at 7pm at The Blockade Runner Beach Resort in Wrightsville Beach, NC.
Performing for the HAYWOOD COUNTY ARTS COUNCIL. Joining me are Zack Page, Brian Felix and Justin Watt.
I'm so pleased and honored to be selected by the Arts Council to perform in their 2012 Music Series. More so, I'm eager to be actively supporting the growth of jazz in the local area. More info: January 19th Jazz
Happy New Year, and what a year it'll be. To imagine all your dreams can and will come true, in short, the dress-rehearsal is over and it's front and center for anyone who's been sewing their seeds.
Satin Steel Jazz is one of those seeds and the response in Asheville has been beyond my dreams. Five weeks at Frankie Bones has not only brought us the publicity and notice we've needed, but also the audience to which our music is specific. The golden era of standards innovated by Frank Sinatra, Keely Smith, and Tony Bennett. The classic bossa nova tunes and sounds of Jobim and Stan Getz. The great swing songs like A Foggy Day, Fly Me To The Moon, When Your Lover Has Gone, and The Lady Is A Tramp.
I've enjoyed every minute of fostering this repertoire for years and now we're recording our debut album in February.
Stay informed once we update the calendar - I look forward to singing my heart out for you.
Our last Friday night performance of 2011 will be once again at Asheville's Fabulous Frankie Bones Rest & Lounge.
They don't make 'em any better than two of the highest calibur musicians with me this Friday, Mike Holstein on string bass and Brian Felix on piano.
ALSO a special guest, Asheville's favorite sax man, Matt Getman.
Sultry jazz at its finest in Asheville - come and hear us this week!
As I've posted already, we're incredibly happy and overwhelmed with the beautiful response we're receiving at FRANKIE BONES on Fridays. Each week I look forward to this event.
Tomorrow night, the night before Christmas Eve, I make a special dedication to my late mother who loved this time of year. We'll perform some Christmas favorites including Christmas Time is Here and I'll Be Home For Christmas.
I'll be featuring Richard Shulman on piano, Danny Iannucci on string bass and myself on vocals. Please step up and say hello!!
